Arii Jade

What genre of music do you play?

I play everything! I love having an eclectic vibe - from house & trap to hiphop, funk/disco -  the list goes on. If I can make people happy and dance, then that's a bit of me.

Where are you from in NZ, or around the globe?

I was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Came to New Zealand when I was 6, and then grew up in Auckland, New Zealand.

What’s your favourite kiwi album of all time?

Fat Freddy's Drop - Based on a True Story

Who has been your most inspirational artist of 2019?

Will always be Charli XCX or Rihanna :)

How long have you been DJing for - what’s a career highlight thus far?

Started djing in bars/clubs in mid 2014. Career highlights would have to be the fact I get to see the coolest places and cities doing what I do, I travel the country for shows as well as Fiji, the islands, and Australia.

Have you performed at any music festivals?

Not in the most traditional sense. I've played support shows for many amazing NZ musicians such as Che Fu, Sons of Zion, Stan Walker, etc the list goes on - but as for festivals I've only done my own headline festival shows in Fiji for consecutive New Years Eve parties (amazing there playing to people from so many different countries! SO much fun).

Have you played at NZFW before?

I've only ever attended before, this will be my first time DJing NZFW.

Mez2.jpg

Pharaoh Swami

Who is Pharaoh Swami?

This is the artist name of Mezmure Tekeste – an Auckland local who originally immigrated to NZ from Ethiopia at the age of 6.

Mez is a dedicated artist in every sense of the word. He lives in a creative space, experimenting with sound and writing lyrics to express his spiritual journey. He is an incredibly charismatic individual whose life is steered completely by his passion for music!

What does Swami mean?

By definition, swami is an old Hindi term for “One who understands oneself”.

It also stands for “(S)o-(W)ho-(AM)-(I). - The question Mez and his fellow creatives ask themselves is; “Am I the paintbrush or the artist?

“We constantly ask ourselves (this question) as we try to question, challenge, discover and redefine ourselves in a cold and somewhat un-homely world.” – Mez.

Introducing – ‘Yene Nefsie’ (Juice Edit) by Pharaoh Swami

Yene Nefsie – meaning “My Soul” – is an afro beat song that celebrates life and love. It says “My soul – come and have a dance with me”.

Swami’s version borrows the beat and hook from a famous African artist called YCee and his song “Juice”. Swami has introduced his own lyrics, transforming a song that is inspirational to him into a special piece of his own personal journey.

Tina Mairi

What genre of music do you play?

I play a blend of underground house, minimal and Detroit-inspired techno, either toned down to provide a stylish background to drink cocktails to or amped up to get the dancefloor moving.

Where are you from in NZ, or around the globe?

I’m an Auckland local.

What’s your favourite kiwi album of all time?

Vicarious by Strawpeople. I love the lush moodiness of it paired with the purity of Fiona McDonald’s voice.

Who has been your most inspirational artist of 2019?

I’ve really been enjoying music from young Dutch producer Upsammy, particularly her track Vacate or Annihilate. The drum patterns are so fresh and surprising, good fun for a peak time set.

How long have you been DJing for - what’s a career highlight thus far?

I’ve been playing out for four years now and I love it. During one memorable gig at Ink bar on K Road a line of young European men formed mid set to come up and give me a kiss on the cheek and/or hand me a shot – that was a fun moment…

Have you performed at any music festivals?

I play at Shipwrecked every year, a beautiful boutique music and arts festival put together with love on a beautiful lakeside property at Te Arai, not far north of Auckland. It’s a special one, well worth checking out.

Have you played at NZFW before?

This is my first time – I’m looking forward to some fashionable fun.

Gabriella Gonzalez

Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/gabriella-gonzlaez

How long have you been DJ’ing?

Almost 9 years

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Born in Bs As, Argentina. Based in Auckland, NZ, for almost 14 years.

Gabriella's goals:

1. To secure my dream of not only delivering underground sounds to crowds that appreciate new music in New Zealand and overseas, but teaming up with others to host top House and Techno events.

2. I'd love to produce more of my own music with other talented producers after producing "Karma". Such collaborations are a definite focus for me in the future.

3. More than anything, I want to make DJing the business I love. If I can do that, I could help promote more female DJs into the scene, because there is a lot of talent out there that needs to be heard.

Have you played Fashion Week before and do you have a highlight?

Yup. I think like 3 times - the highlights are the people I meet and the goodie bags!

What do you love about DJ’ing?

I love making the crowd happy with the music I choose to play- especially when it's House and Techno music. I love interacting with the crowd and have a boogie with them, too while I Dj.

What’s the highlight/s of your musical career thus far?

1. The ongoing huge love & support from followers

2. Djing for Morning People

3. Supporting big international House & Techno Dj/producers like Anthony Pappa for Sonorous, Brazilian Techno producer Wehbba for Collude and GWAP (UK) for Real People.

4. Djing on Friends From Around the World NZ (Shipwrecked) and also AUM New Year music festivals. These events are both put up with love and heaps of hard work, and it's well reflected when you're lucky enough to experience them.

5. Djing at INK Bar
